Hilton is expanding its presence in Iceland with the upcoming launch of Skald Hotel Akureyri, Curio Collection by Hilton, set to open in August 2026. This marks a significant development for travelers seeking loyalty points options outside of Reykjavik, where the majority of Iceland’s hotels are concentrated.
Expansion Beyond Reykjavik
Currently, points hotel availability in Iceland is limited, with most properties clustered around the capital city. The new hotel in Akureyri – Iceland’s second-largest urban center – will offer 86 guest rooms across three floors, blending modern amenities with Icelandic cultural elements.
The location in northern Iceland is strategic. The region is popular among tourists for its accessibility to the Diamond Circle and Arctic Circle, offering attractions like whale watching and Northern Lights viewing. Akureyri also has an airport with multiple airlines serving it, making it convenient for travelers.
Hotel Amenities and Pricing
Skald Hotel Akureyri will feature a lounge, lobby bar, an all-day dining restaurant with a terrace, and a social club concept.
Pricing varies seasonally. Summer rates start around $450 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night, while winter rates begin at approximately $250 or 55,000 points. The increase in award costs matching cash rates makes maximizing point value more challenging for Hilton Honors members.
Why This Matters
Iceland has become a sought-after destination for its unique natural beauty. However, luxury accommodations outside of Reykjavik remain limited and expensive.
The addition of a Hilton property broadens accessibility, particularly for loyalty program members. While it’s not positioned as a high-end destination in itself, it serves as a practical option for exploring Iceland beyond the capital. This expansion could also pave the way for further development of points-based hospitality in the country.
The opening of Skald Hotel Akureyri is a step toward making Iceland more accessible to travelers who prefer to leverage hotel loyalty programs for their adventures.
