Cathay Pacific has officially pulled back the curtain on the redesigned The Wing, its flagship First Class lounge at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). Following an extensive 11-month renovation, the airline is positioning this space as the new benchmark for its global lounge strategy, blending high-end contemporary design with a sense of residential warmth.

While the aesthetic upgrades are significant, the reopening comes with a notable change in access policy that may impact frequent flyers across the one world alliance.

A Fusion of Luxury and Tradition

To achieve its new look, Cathay Pacific partnered once again with London-based StudioIlse. The design philosophy moves toward a “holistic” experience, aiming to balance social spaces with high levels of privacy.

The material palette is a sophisticated mix of textures designed to evoke both modern luxury and cultural heritage:
Green Onyx: Remains a signature anchoring element of the space.
Walnut Wood: Introduced in various finishes to provide warmth and depth.
Granite Flooring: A nod to traditional Chinese architectural elements.

Key Features and New Amenities

The redesigned layout organizes the lounge into distinct zones, catering to different passenger needs—from social dining to focused work:

  • The Atrium & Pantry: A bright, central hub designed for casual dining with an evolving menu and self-serve snack options.
  • The Dining Room: A formal space offering a la carte table service with a mix of Asian and international cuisine.
  • The Retreat: A new addition featuring seven private booths where guests can access foot, neck, or shoulder massages—marking the first time spa-style treatments have been integrated into The Wing.
  • The Alcove: Five multipurpose booths equipped with charging stations, optimized for comfort and privacy.
  • The Bureau: Dedicated, fully enclosed workspaces for passengers needing to conduct meetings or work in total seclusion.
  • Enhanced Shower Suites: Updated facilities designed for refreshment during long layovers.

Note: While the new shower suites are an upgrade in modern design, the renovation sees the removal of the “Cabanas”—the highly acclaimed, iconic shower suites that were previously considered a global industry standard.

The “Catch”: A Temporary Restriction on Access

Despite the premium upgrades, there is a significant caveat for many premium travelers. Historically, Cathay Pacific’s First Class lounges have been accessible to all one world First Class passengers and one world Emerald members.

However, due to anticipated high demand, Cathay Pacific is implementing a temporary restriction on access during the initial reopening phase to ensure service standards remain high.

During this period, access will be limited to:
1. Cathay Pacific First Class passengers.
2. Cathay Pacific Diamond members (and above).

Who is excluded?
Other one world First Class passengers and one world Emerald members (who hold status with other airlines) will be redirected to The Pier First Class Lounge or other available Cathay Pacific lounges at HKG. While the airline suggests this is an “initial period” measure, the long-term duration of these restrictions remains unconfirmed.

Summary

The new The Wing represents a massive investment in Cathay Pacific’s premium brand, offering a more diverse range of services from spa treatments to private workspaces. However, the decision to limit access to loyal Cathay Pacific customers and First Class travelers creates a temporary barrier for the broader one world alliance community.
