American Airlines is going back to Japan.
Starting in March 2027 — wait, let’s check that date, is it really 2027? The prompt says March 27, which must mean the 27th, not the year — yes, the 27th — they resume daily service between Chicago and Tokyo Narita. It’s a Boeing 787-8? No, the -9. 305 seats. 30 of those are business class. The rest is premium economy and economy filler.
It feels like déjà vu.
American actually flew this route before. Until January 2020, mind you. Not during the pandemic collapse. Before it. Back when American was already packing its bags from Chicago.
So this is a return.
But honestly? It’s sort of bland.
“It’s technically a route resumption, but emotionally? It feels like copying homework.”
Why do it?
United is winning in Chicago. Big time. American wants to claw back some ground. So they throw a line across the Pacific. It makes strategic sense, sure, but it doesn’t make your heart race.
Meanwhile, American is canceling its Philadelphia to Doha flight. Permanent death for that route. They need to fill a metal or two elsewhere. Suspect this Tokyo slot replaces it.
Why fly American?
You probably won’t.
If you have miles? Sure, burn them. If you have a Systemwide Upgrade? Use it.
Otherwise, just fly Japan Airlines. JAL flies the exact same route, twice daily even (Narita and Haneda). Same joint venture partners. Same fare coordination. Why pick the underdog when the local champion is already doing the job?
American’s long-haul map has grown tired.
Used to be they had flair. Now? Latin America dominates their schedule. Beyond that, it’s mostly flying to joint venture hubs. Dallas is their gateway to Asia now. Houston. JFK. LAX.
Chicago was an outpost. They left it. Now they’re tentatively returning.
Is it great? Yes, more competition is good. Is it exciting? No. It’s just… safe.
American isn’t looking to pioneer new paths to obscure destinations. They want to defend their turf in the Windy City. A solid 787 over the Pacific, landing at Narita.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
So will you fly it? Probably not unless the price is right or you’re a collector of frequent flyer points. But at least the option is back.
